about the Döppersberg
THE NEW GATE TO THE CITY OF WUPPERTAL
The redesign of the Döppersberg is currently the most important task of urban development, and an outstanding project of the city and the region. The target of the construction measure is the urban development and functional value increase of the entire area around the train station. Two of the most important central quarters in the city area – the inner city and the train station area – are recombined to turn an area currently dominated by traffic back into a quarter that is worth living in, popular and populated: The gate to the city.
The central real estate projects of the Döppersberg are the main train station of Wuppertal, the bus station of Wuppertal, the cableway station Döppersberg, the business building Döppersberg, the pedestrian zone Elberfeld and the City Outlet Wuppertal. The new Döppersberg is to be completed by the end of 2017.
Signature Capital has invested 55 million euros for the private development project at the Döppersberg, currently the largest city development project in Wuppertal.
After the council order from February 10th 2015 the start of the construction of a central, architecturally attractive office building as well as further business units with more than 10,000 sqm rentable space.
"Today is an important day for the Döppersberg and Wuppertal", says mayor Peter Jung. A one year process has come to a good end. Both sides praised the fair partnership. "Due to the positive development we have decided during the negotiation phase to increase our investment" confirms Timo Herzberg from Signature Capital. Initially, 30 million invest were planned for the business building according to the construction plans by the architectural office Chapman Taylor, but now total investment was increased to 55 million euros in order to develop the shop bridge with attractive retail spaces.
Benefit for the city
Besides the municipal investment of 140.5 million euros that positively influence the urban revaluation of the area around the train station and the optimization of the infrastructure it was always a prevailing goal to gain a private investor. With the planned retail spaces the inner city and the central station will be connected to a integrated city location. "It is crucial for us to create a business complex with modern architecture in this top location to establish a project with long-lasting value" as explained by the city government. To be estimated carefully 500 new workplaces could be generated in the future. The city and the investor are convinced that this project will attire a new customer segment and the architectural style will be a symbol of the growing strenght of the Elberfelder city.
